You’re all I need to get by
Our newest video on YouTube, one of Ashford & Simpson’s finest tunes:
I smile a little at the memory of how we came to learn this song in the first place. We learn new songs for each wedding ceremony, but sourcing recordings is a much easier task in this era of online resources than it was in the early days of The Gospel Project. I think we learned this song for a wedding in 2005, in the days before YouTube, and at the time I was unfamiliar with the song, so there was a protracted email exchange with the client trying to describe the tune to me (I’ll always remember this because the subject of each email was ‘You’re all I need to get by’. And it wasn’t spam!) In the end she posted me a CD. Positively old-fashioned :- We liked it so much as an ensemble that we ended up recording it, making it the opening track of On the Outside.
This version was recorded live in St. Finian’s Church, Dublin 2. You know it’s live with no cheating because you can hear a baby beginning to cry (and then thinking better of it!) about halfway through. Enjoy.
